How Biofreeze Works

Biofreeze contains menthol as its active ingredient, which has several effects on the body. When applied to the skin, menthol produces a cooling sensation that helps distract and soothe the underlying area of pain. This cooling effect activates specific nerve receptors in the skin called cold receptors or thermoreceptors.

When the cold receptors are stimulated by menthol, they send signals to the brain, competing with the pain signals being transmitted through the same nerve fibers. The brain can only process a limited amount of sensory information at a time, so when the cold signals from menthol reach the brain first, they effectively close the pain gate. As a result, the brain receives fewer pain signals and the perception of pain is diminished or temporarily alleviated.

FAQ
What is cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is a therapeutic technique that involves exposing the body or specific body parts to extremely cold temperatures for a short period. The aim is to promote various health benefits, such as reducing inflammation, relieving pain, and enhancing recovery. Cryotherapy can be delivered through different methods, including whole-body cryotherapy chambers, localized cryotherapy devices, or ice packs. The intense cold triggers physiological responses in the body, constricting blood vessels and reducing tissue temperature. This process can potentially improve circulation, boost the immune system, and provide pain relief. Cryotherapy is commonly used in sports medicine, rehabilitation, and wellness settings.
What is a topical analgesic?
A topical analgesic is a type of pain-relieving medication that is applied directly to the skin. It is designed to alleviate pain and discomfort in the area where it is applied. Topical analgesics come in various forms, including gels, creams, sprays, patches, and ointments. These products typically contain active ingredients such as menthol, camphor, lidocaine, or capsaicin, which work by targeting pain receptors or interfering with pain signals in the affected area. Biofreeze is a well-known brand of topical analgesic that uses menthol as its active ingredient. When applied to the skin, Biofreeze provides a cooling sensation that helps to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains
How does Biofreeze work compared to ice?
Biofreeze and ice are both types of cryotherapy that can provide pain relief. However, Biofreeze has demonstrated its superiority in several aspects. By choosing Biofreeze, you can effectively reduce pain while minimizing the inconvenient side effects commonly associated with ice, such as stiffness, skin irritation, and numbness. Additionally, using Biofreeze doesn’t require you to remain inactive during application, allowing you to continue your activities while experiencing the therapeutic benefits.
Is Biofreeze used by professional athletes ?
Many professional, college, and high school athletes and fitness enthusiasts use Biofreeze.
Is Biofreeze used by medical professionals?

No, Biofreeze is not intended to be used for those purposes. Be sure to wash your hands after application. If Biofreeze gets in your eyes, it can cause harm.

What should I do if I get a rash or experience mild skin irritation from Biofreeze?
